He people who owned my home previously had no idea what they were doing. I’ve spent days. literally, trying to remove old wallpaper, fixing the walls, etc. I don’t want to do this with the bathroom border if I don’t have to. So would putting a new border over the ugly existing one work? Or can I prime/paint over it? Or do I have to take it down? Thanks for your help!
I have done many wallpaper projects for myself and for other people and I do not recommend papering over paper. Most boarders for kitchens and baths are vinal coated and new paper does not adhere to it well without special vinal glue, also the old seams and any defects will show through, the moisture from the new paper and also paint will make the old let loose and you will have to take it all down and then buy new again. I have taken many paper coverings down as well. My last job was a 16 X 16 kitchen full coverage with boarder was done in an afternoon..1st score with wallpaper tool (I use an exacto knife and do not cut hard it damages the under wall) and peel top coat (picture) off as much as you can, leaving just the paper, then wet it down with a sponge, wait, have lunch, a soda, cup of coffee, then go back and wipe the residue off with a towel. Wash with mild soapy water where boarder was to remove any old glue residue allow it to dry and you are ready to go. It is never asn easy project but to get the best results and not have to redo in a few years will make it worth your while…so roll up your sleeves and happy papering.
